BAGHDAD—At least nine Iraqis were killed and 72 wounded Tuesday in a spate of bombings in Baghdad, with some targeting schools, a Ministry of Interior official said.
All of the attacks, which involved four car bombs and one roadside bomb, occurred in predominantly Shiite neighborhoods of the capital during morning rush hour. One of the car bombs targeted day laborers waiting for work in the Sadr City district, and two other car bombs exploded outside elementary and secondary schools in the Hurriyah and Shuala districts, the official said.
Almost 300 people have been killed and hundreds more wounded in acts of violence in Iraq since the departure of all U.S. troops from the country on Dec. 18, according to health and security officials. The violence comes amid a political crisis that has pitted Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite, against a Sunni-dominated faction within his coalition government.
